Syria Attacks Israel
1 King Benhadad of Syria called his army together. He was joined by 32 other kings with their horses and chariots, and together they marched to Samaria and attacked. 2 Benhadad sent a messenger to tell King Ahab of Israel, 3 “Ahab, give me your silver and gold, your wives, and your strongest sons!”
4 “Your Majesty,” Ahab replied, “everything I have is yours, including me.”
5 Later, Benhadad sent another messenger to say to Ahab, “I already told you to give me your silver and gold, your wives, and your children. 6 But tomorrow at this time, I will send my officials into your city to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will take everything else that you own.”
7 Ahab called a meeting with the leaders of Israel and said, “Benhadad is causing real trouble. He told me to give him my wives and children, as well as my silver and gold. And I agreed.”
8 “Don't listen to him!” they answered. “You don't have to do what he says.”
9 So Ahab sent someone to tell Benhadad, “Your Majesty, I'll give you my silver and gold, and even my wives and children. But I won't let you have anything else.”
When Benhadad got his answer, 10 he replied, “I'll completely destroy Samaria! There won't even be enough of it left for my soldiers to carry back in their hands. If I don't do it, I pray that the gods will punish me terribly.”
11 Ahab then answered, “Benhadad, don't brag before the fighting even begins. Wait and see if you live through it.”
12 Meanwhile, Benhadad and the other kings had been drinking in their tents. But when Ahab's reply came, he ordered his soldiers to prepare to attack Samaria, and they all got ready.
13 At that very moment, a prophet ran up to Ahab and said, “You can see that Benhadad's army is very strong. But the Lord has promised to help you defeat them today. Then you will know that the Lord is in control.”
14 “Who will fight the battle?” Ahab asked.
The prophet answered, “The young bodyguards who serve the district officials.”
“But who will lead them into battle?” Ahab asked.
“You will!” the prophet replied.
15 So Ahab called together the 232 young soldiers and the 7,000 troops in Israel's army, and he got them ready to fight the Syrians.
Israel Defeats the Syrians
16-17 At noon, King Ahab and his Israelite army marched out of Samaria, with the young soldiers in front.
King Benhadad of Syria and the 32 kings with him were drunk when the scouts he had sent out ran up to his tent, shouting, “We just now saw soldiers marching out of Samaria!”
18 “Take them alive!” Benhadad ordered. “I don't care if they have come out to fight or to surrender.”
19 The young soldiers led Israel's troops into battle, 20 and each of them attacked and killed an enemy soldier. The rest of the Syrian army turned and ran, and the Israelites went after them. Benhadad and some others escaped on horses, 21 but Ahab and his soldiers followed them and captured their horses and chariots.
Ahab and Israel's army crushed the Syrians.
22 Later, the prophet went back and warned Ahab, “Benhadad will attack you again next spring. Build up your troops and make sure you have some good plans.”
Syria Attacks Israel Again
23 Meanwhile, Benhadad's officials went to him and explained:
Israel's gods are mountain gods. We fought Israel's army in the hills, and that's why they defeated us. But if we fight them on flat land, there's no way we can lose.
24 Here's what you should do. First, get rid of those 32 kings and put army commanders in their places. 25 Then get more soldiers, horses, and chariots, so your army will be as strong as it was before. We'll fight Israel's army on flat land and wipe them out.
Benhadad agreed and did what they suggested.
26 In the spring, Benhadad got his army together, and they marched to the town of Aphek to attack Israel. 27 The Israelites also prepared to fight. They marched out to meet the Syrians, and the two armies camped across from each other. The Syrians covered the whole area, but the Israelites looked like two little flocks of goats.
28 The prophet went to Ahab and said, “The Syrians think the Lord is a god of the hills and not of the valleys. So he has promised to help you defeat their powerful army. Then you will know that the Lord is in control.”
29 For seven days the two armies stayed in their camps, facing each other. Then on the seventh day the fighting broke out, and before sunset the Israelites had killed 100,000 Syrian troops. 30 The rest of the Syrian army ran back to Aphek, but the town wall fell and crushed 27,000 of them.
Benhadad also escaped to Aphek and hid in the back room of a house. 31 His officials said, “Your Majesty, we've heard that Israel's kings keep their agreements. We will wrap sackcloth around our waists, put ropes around our heads, and ask Ahab to let you live.”
32 They dressed in sackcloth and put ropes on their heads, then they went to Ahab and said, “Your servant Benhadad asks you to let him live.”
“Is he still alive?” Ahab asked. “Benhadad is like a brother to me.”
33 Benhadad's officials were trying to figure out what Ahab was thinking, and when he said “brother,” they quickly replied, “You're right! You and Benhadad are like brothers.”
“Go get him,” Ahab said.
When Benhadad came out, Ahab had him climb up into his chariot.
34 Benhadad said, “I'll give back the towns my father took from your father. And you can have shops in Damascus, just as my father had in Samaria.”
Ahab replied, “If you do these things, I'll let you go free.” Then they signed a peace treaty, and Ahab let Benhadad go.
A Prophet Condemns Ahab
35 About this time the Lord commanded a prophet to say to a friend, “Hit me!” But the friend refused, 36 and the prophet told him, “You disobeyed the Lord, and as soon as you walk away, a lion will kill you.” The friend left, and suddenly a lion killed him.
37 The prophet found someone else and said, “Hit me!” So this man beat him up.
38 The prophet left and put a bandage over his face to disguise himself. Then he went and stood beside the road, waiting for Ahab to pass by.
39 When Ahab went by, the prophet shouted, “Your Majesty, right in the heat of battle, someone brought a prisoner to me and told me to guard him. He said if the prisoner got away, I would either be killed or forced to pay 3,000 pieces of silver. 40 But I got busy doing other things, and the prisoner escaped.”
Ahab answered, “You will be punished just as you have said.”
41 The man quickly tore the bandage off his face, and Ahab saw that he was one of the prophets. 42 The prophet said, “The Lord told you to kill Benhadad, but you let him go. Now you will die in his place, and your people will die in place of his people.”
43 Ahab went back to Samaria, angry and depressed.

Il monta, mit le siège devant Samarie et l’attaqua. 2 Il envoya dans la ville des messagers à Achab, roi d’Israël, 3 et lui fit dire: Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad: Ton argent et ton or sont à moi, tes femmes et tes plus beaux enfants sont à moi. 4 Le roi d’Israël répondit: Roi, mon seigneur, comme tu le dis, je suis à toi avec tout ce que j’ai. 5 Les messagers retournèrent, et dirent: Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad: Je t’ai fait dire: Tu me livreras ton argent et ton or, tes femmes et tes enfants. 6 J’enverrai donc demain, à cette heure, mes serviteurs chez toi; ils fouilleront ta maison et les maisons de tes serviteurs, ils mettront la main sur tout ce que tu as de précieux, et ils l’emporteront. 7 Le roi d’Israël appela tous les anciens du pays, et il dit: Sentez bien et comprenez que cet homme nous veut du mal; car il m’a envoyé demander mes femmes et mes enfants, mon argent et mon or, et je ne lui avais pas refusé! 8 Tous les anciens et tout le peuple dirent à Achab: Ne l’écoute pas et ne consens pas. 9 Et il dit aux messagers de Ben-Hadad: Dites à mon seigneur le roi: Je ferai tout ce que tu as envoyé demander à ton serviteur la première fois; mais pour cette chose, je ne puis pas la faire. Les messagers s’en allèrent, et lui portèrent la réponse. 10 Ben-Hadad envoya dire à Achab: Que les dieux me traitent dans toute leur rigueur, si la poussière de Samarie suffit pour remplir le creux de la main de tout le peuple qui me suit! 11 Et le roi d’Israël répondit: Que celui qui revêt une armure ne se glorifie pas comme celui qui la dépose! 12 Lorsque Ben-Hadad reçut cette réponse, il était à boire avec les rois sous les tentes, et il dit à ses serviteurs: Faites vos préparatifs! Et ils firent leurs préparatifs contre la ville. 13 Mais voici, un prophète s’approcha d’Achab, roi d’Israël, et il dit: Ainsi parle l’Éternel: Vois-tu toute cette grande multitude? Je vais la livrer aujourd’hui entre tes mains, et tu sauras que je suis l’Éternel. 14 Achab dit: Par qui? Et il répondit: Ainsi parle l’Éternel: Par les serviteurs des chefs des provinces. Achab dit: Qui engagera le combat? Et il répondit: Toi. 15 Alors Achab passa en revue les serviteurs des chefs des provinces, et il s’en trouva deux cent trente-deux; et après eux, il passa en revue tout le peuple, tous les enfants d’Israël, et ils étaient sept mille. 16 Ils firent une sortie à midi. Ben-Hadad buvait et s’enivrait sous les tentes avec les trente-deux rois, ses auxiliaires. 17 Les serviteurs des chefs des provinces sortirent les premiers. Ben-Hadad s’informa, et on lui fit ce rapport: Des hommes sont sortis de Samarie. 18 Il dit: S’ils sortent pour la paix, saisissez-les vivants; et s’ils sortent pour le combat, saisissez-les vivants. 19 Lorsque les serviteurs des chefs des provinces et l’armée qui les suivait furent sortis de la ville, 20 chacun frappa son homme, et les Syriens prirent la fuite. Israël les poursuivit. Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, se sauva sur un cheval, avec des cavaliers. 21 Le roi d’Israël sortit, frappa les chevaux et les chars, et fit éprouver aux Syriens une grande défaite.

Ps 46:9-12.22 Alors le prophète s’approcha du roi d’Israël, et lui dit: Va, fortifie toi, examine et vois ce que tu as à faire; car, au retour de l’année, le roi de Syrie montera contre toi. 23 Les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent: Leur dieu est un dieu de montagnes; c’est pourquoi ils ont été plus forts que nous. Mais combattons-les dans la plaine, et l’on verra si nous ne serons pas plus forts qu’eux. 24 Fais encore ceci: ôte chacun des rois de son poste, et remplace-les par des chefs; 25 et forme-toi une armée pareille à celle que tu as perdue, avec autant de chevaux et autant de chars. Puis nous les combattrons dans la plaine, et l’on verra si nous ne serons pas plus forts qu’eux. Il les écouta, et fit ainsi. 26 L’année suivante, Ben-Hadad passa les Syriens en revue, et monta vers Aphek pour combattre Israël. 27 Les enfants d’Israël furent aussi passés en revue; ils reçurent des vivres, et ils marchèrent à la rencontre des Syriens. Ils campèrent vis-à-vis d’eux, semblables à deux petits troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Syriens remplissaient le pays. 28 L’homme de Dieu s’approcha, et dit au roi d’Israël: Ainsi parle l’Éternel: Parce que les Syriens ont dit: L’Éternel est un dieu des montagnes et non un dieu des vallées, je livrerai toute cette grande multitude entre tes mains, et vous saurez que je suis l’Éternel. 29 Ils campèrent sept jours en face les uns des autres. Le septième jour, le combat s’engagea, et les enfants d’Israël tuèrent aux Syriens cent mille hommes de pied en un jour. 30 Le reste s’enfuit à la ville d’Aphek, et la muraille tomba sur vingt-sept mille hommes qui restaient. Ben-Hadad s’était réfugié dans la ville, où il allait de chambre en chambre.

Jé 48:10. 1 R 22:30-38. 2 Co 6:14.31 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: Voici, nous avons appris que les rois de la maison d’Israël sont des rois miséricordieux; nous allons mettre des sacs sur nos reins et des cordes à nos têtes, et nous sortirons vers le roi d’Israël: peut-être qu’il te laissera la vie. 32 Ils se mirent des sacs autour des reins et des cordes autour de la tête, et ils allèrent auprès du roi d’Israël. Ils dirent: Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad dit: Laisse-moi la vie! Achab répondit: Est-il encore vivant? Il est mon frère. 33 Ces hommes tirèrent de là un bon augure, et ils se hâtèrent de le prendre au mot et de dire: Ben-Hadad est ton frère! Et il dit: Allez, amenez-le. Ben-Hadad vint vers lui, et Achab le fit monter sur son char. 34 Ben-Hadad lui dit: Je te rendrai les villes que mon père a prises à ton père; et tu établiras pour toi des rues à Damas, comme mon père en avait établi à Samarie. Et moi, reprit Achab, je te laisserai aller, en faisant une alliance. Il fit alliance avec lui, et le laissa aller. 35 L’un des fils des prophètes dit à son compagnon, d’après l’ordre de l’Éternel: Frappe-moi, je te prie! Mais cet homme refusa de le frapper. 36 Alors il lui dit: Parce que tu n’as pas obéi à la voix de l’Éternel, voici, quand tu m’auras quitté, le lion te frappera. Et quand il l’eut quitté, le lion le rencontra et le frappa. 37 Il trouva un autre homme, et il dit: Frappe-moi, je te prie! Cet homme le frappa et le blessa. 38 Le prophète alla se placer sur le chemin du roi, et il se déguisa avec un bandeau sur les yeux. 39 Lorsque le roi passa, il cria vers lui, et dit: Ton serviteur était au milieu du combat; et voici, un homme s’approche et m’amène un homme, en disant: Garde cet homme; s’il vient à manquer, ta vie répondra de sa vie, ou tu paieras un talent d’argent! 40 Et pendant que ton serviteur agissait çà et là, l’homme a disparu. Le roi d’Israël lui dit: C’est là ton jugement; tu l’as prononcé toi-même. 41 Aussitôt le prophète ôta le bandeau de dessus ses yeux, et le roi d’Israël le reconnut pour l’un des prophètes. 42 Il dit alors au roi: Ainsi parle l’Éternel: Parce que tu as laissé échapper de tes mains l’homme que j’avais dévoué par interdit, ta vie répondra de sa vie, et ton peuple de son peuple. 43 Le roi d’Israël s’en alla chez lui, triste et irrité, et il arriva à Samarie.
