Ahimelech Helps David
1 David went to see Ahimelech, a priest who lived in the town of Nob. Ahimelech was trembling with fear as he came out to meet David. “Why are you alone?” Ahimelech asked. “Why isn't anyone else with you?”
2 “I'm on a mission for King Saul,” David answered. “He ordered me not to tell anyone what the mission is all about, so I ordered my soldiers to stay somewhere else. 3 Do you have any food you can give me? Could you spare five loaves of bread?”
4 “The only bread I have is the sacred bread,” the priest told David. “You can have it if your soldiers didn't sleep with women last night.”
5 “Of course we didn't sleep with women,” David answered. “I never let my men do that when we're on a mission. They have to be acceptable to worship God even when we're on a regular mission, and today we're on a special mission.”
6 The only bread the priest had was the sacred bread that he had taken from the place of worship after putting out the fresh loaves. So he gave it to David.
7 It so happened that one of Saul's officers was there, worshiping the Lord that day. His name was Doeg the Edomite, and he was the strongest of Saul's shepherds.
8 David asked Ahimelech, “Do you have a spear or a sword? I had to leave so quickly on this mission for the king that I didn't bring along my sword or any other weapons.”
9 The priest answered, “The only sword here is the one that belonged to Goliath the Philistine. You were the one who killed him in Elah Valley, and so you can take his sword if you want to. It's wrapped in a cloth behind the statue.”
“It's the best sword there is,” David said. “I'll take it!”
David Tries To Find Safety in Gath
10 David kept on running from Saul that day until he came to Gath, where he met with King Achish. 11 The officers of King Achish were also there, and they asked Achish, “Isn't David a king back in his own country? Don't the Israelites dance and sing,
‘Saul has killed
a thousand enemies;
David has killed
ten thousand’?”
12 David thought about what they were saying, and it made him afraid of Achish. 13 So right there in front of everyone, he pretended to be insane. He acted confused and started making scratches on the doors of the town gate, while drooling in his beard.
14 “Look at him!” Achish said to his officers. “You can see he's crazy. Why did you bring him to me? 15 I have enough crazy people without your bringing another one here. Keep him away from my palace!”

Mt 12:1-8. 1 S 22:9, etc.1 David se rendit à Nob, vers le sacrificateur Achimélec, qui accourut effrayé au-devant de lui et lui dit: Pourquoi es-tu seul et n’y a-t-il personne avec toi? 2 David répondit au sacrificateur Achimélec: Le roi m’a donné un ordre et m’a dit: Que personne ne sache rien de l’affaire pour laquelle je t’envoie et de l’ordre que je t’ai donné. J’ai fixé un rendez-vous à mes gens. 3 Maintenant qu’as-tu sous la main? Donne-moi cinq pains, ou ce qui se trouvera. 4 Le sacrificateur répondit à David: Je n’ai pas de pain ordinaire sous la main, mais il y a du pain consacré; si du moins tes gens se sont abstenus de femmes! 5 David répondit au sacrificateur: Nous nous sommes abstenus de femmes depuis trois jours que je suis parti, et tous mes gens sont purs: d’ailleurs, si c’est là un acte profane, il sera certainement aujourd’hui sanctifié par celui qui en sera l’instrument. 6 Alors le sacrificateur lui donna du pain consacré, car il n’y avait là d’autre pain que du pain de proposition, qu’on avait ôté de devant l’Éternel pour le remplacer par du pain chaud au moment où on l’avait pris. 7 Là, ce même jour, un homme d’entre les serviteurs de Saül se trouvait enfermé devant l’Éternel; c’était un Édomite, nommé Doëg, chef des bergers de Saül. 8 David dit à Achimélec: N’as-tu pas sous la main une lance ou une épée? Car je n’ai pris avec moi ni mon épée ni mes armes, parce que l’ordre du roi était pressant. 9 Le sacrificateur répondit: Voici l’épée de Goliath, le Philistin, que tu as tué dans la vallée des térébinthes; elle est enveloppée dans un drap, derrière l’éphod; si tu veux la prendre, prends-la, car il n’y en a pas d’autre ici. Et David dit: Il n’y en a point de pareille; donne-la-moi.
V. 10-15: cf. 1 S 27. (Ps 34; 56.)10 David se leva et s’enfuit le même jour loin de Saül. Il arriva chez Akisch, roi de Gath. 11 Les serviteurs d’Akisch lui dirent: N’est-ce pas là David, roi du pays? N’est-ce pas celui pour qui l’on chantait en dansant:
Saül a frappé ses mille,
Et David ses dix mille?
12 David prit à cœur ces paroles, et il eut une grande crainte d’Akisch, roi de Gath. 13 Il se montra comme fou à leurs yeux, et fit devant eux des extravagances; il faisait des marques sur les battants des portes, et il laissait couler sa salive sur sa barbe. 14 Akisch dit à ses serviteurs: Vous voyez bien que cet homme a perdu la raison; pourquoi me l’amenez-vous? 15 Est-ce que je manque de fous, pour que vous m’ameniez celui-ci et me rendiez témoin de ses extravagances? Faut-il qu’il entre dans ma maison?
