King Jehoahaz of Israel
1 Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in the twenty-third year of Joash's rule in Judah. Jehoahaz ruled 17 years from Samaria 2 and disobeyed the Lord by doing wrong. He never stopped following the example of Jeroboam, who had caused the Israelites to sin.
3 The Lord was angry with the Israelites, so he let King Hazael of Syria and his son Benhadad rule over them for a long time. 4 Jehoahaz prayed to the Lord for help, and the Lord saw how terribly Hazael was treating the Israelites. He answered Jehoahaz 5 by sending Israel a leader who rescued them from the Syrians, and the Israelites lived in peace as they had before. 6-7 But Hazael had defeated Israel's army so badly that Jehoahaz had only 10 chariots, 50 cavalry troops, and 10,000 regular soldiers left in his army.
The Israelites kept sinning and following the example of Jeroboam's family. They did not tear down the sacred poles that had been set up in Samaria for the worship of the goddess Asherah.
8 Everything else Jehoahaz did while he was king, including his brave deeds, is written in The History of the Kings of Israel. 9 Jehoahaz died and was buried in Samaria, and his son Jehoash became king.
King Jehoash of Israel
10 Jehoash became king of Israel in the thirty-seventh year of Joash's rule in Judah, and he ruled 16 years from Samaria. 11 He disobeyed the Lord by doing just like Jeroboam, who had caused the Israelites to sin.
12 Everything else Jehoash did while he was king, including his war against King Amaziah of Judah, is written in The History of the Kings of Israel. 13 Jehoash died and was buried in Samaria beside the other Israelite kings. His son Jeroboam then became king.
Elisha the Prophet Dies
14 Some time before the death of King Jehoash, Elisha the prophet was very sick and about to die. Jehoash went in and stood beside him, crying. He said, “Master, what will Israel's chariots and cavalry be able to do without you?”
15-16 “Grab a bow and some arrows,” Elisha told him, “and hold them in your hand.” Jehoash grabbed the bow and arrows and held them. Elisha placed his hand on the king's hand 17 and said, “Open the window facing east.” When it was open, Elisha shouted, “Now shoot!” Jehoash shot an arrow and Elisha said, “That arrow is a sign that the Lord will help you completely defeat the Syrian army at Aphek.”
18 Elisha said, “Pick up the arrows and hit the ground with them.” Jehoash grabbed the arrows and hit the ground three times, then stopped. 19 Elisha became angry with the king and exclaimed, “If you had struck it five or six times, you would completely wipe out the Syrians. Now you will defeat them only three times.”
20 Elisha died and was buried.
Every year in the spring, Moab's leaders sent raiding parties into Israel. 21 Once, while some Israelites were burying a man's body, they saw a group of Moabites. The Israelites quickly threw the body into Elisha's tomb and ran away. As soon as the man's body touched the bones of Elisha, the man came back to life and stood up.
Israel Defeats Syria
22 Israel was under the power of King Hazael of Syria during the entire rule of Jehoahaz. 23 But the Lord was kind to the Israelites and showed them mercy because of his solemn agreement with their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In fact, he has never turned his back on them or let them be completely destroyed.
24 Hazael died, and his son Benhadad then became king of Syria. 25 King Jehoash of Israel attacked and defeated the Syrian army three times. He took back from Benhadad all the towns Hazael had captured in battle from his father Jehoahaz.
Joachaz et Joas, rois d’Israël
V. 1-9: cf. 2 R 8:11-13. (v. 22-25. 1 S 12:9-11.)1 La vingt-troisième année de Joas, fils d’Achazia, roi de Juda, Joachaz, fils de Jéhu, régna sur Israël à Samarie. Il régna dix-sept ans. 2 Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel; il commit les mêmes péchés que Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui avait fait pécher Israël, et il ne s’en détourna point. 3 La colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma contre Israël, et il les livra entre les mains de Hazaël, roi de Syrie, et entre les mains de Ben-Hadad, fils de Hazaël, tout le temps que ces rois vécurent. 4 Joachaz implora l’Éternel. L’Éternel l’exauça, car il vit l’oppression sous laquelle le roi de Syrie tenait Israël, 5 et l’Éternel donna un libérateur à Israël. Les enfants d’Israël échappèrent aux mains des Syriens, et ils habitèrent dans leurs tentes comme auparavant. 6 Mais ils ne se détournèrent point des péchés de la maison de Jéroboam, qui avait fait pécher Israël; ils s’y livrèrent aussi, et même l’idole d’Astarté était debout à Samarie. 7 De tout le peuple de Joachaz l’Éternel ne lui avait laissé que cinquante cavaliers, dix chars, et dix mille hommes de pied; car le roi de Syrie les avait fait périr et les avait rendus semblables à la poussière qu’on foule aux pieds. 8 Le reste des actions de Joachaz, tout ce qu’il a fait, et ses exploits, cela n’est-il pas écrit dans le livre des Chroniques des rois d’Israël? 9 Joachaz se coucha avec ses pères, et on l’enterra à Samarie. Et Joas, son fils, régna à sa place.

Et Jéroboam s’assit sur son trône. Joas fut enterré à Samarie avec les rois d’Israël.
Mort d’Élisée
V. 14-25: cf. 2 Ch 20:20. Mt 27:50-53.14 Élisée était atteint de la maladie dont il mourut; et Joas, roi d’Israël, descendit vers lui, pleura sur son visage, et dit: Mon père! Mon père! Char d’Israël et sa cavalerie! 15 Élisée lui dit: Prends un arc et des flèches. Et il prit un arc et des flèches. 16 Puis Élisée dit au roi d’Israël: Bande l’arc avec ta main. Et quand il l’eut bandé de sa main, Élisée mit ses mains sur les mains du roi, 17 et il dit: Ouvre la fenêtre à l’orient. Et il l’ouvrit. Élisée dit: Tire. Et il tira. Élisée dit: C’est une flèche de délivrance de la part de l’Éternel, une flèche de délivrance contre les Syriens; tu battras les Syriens à Aphek jusqu’à leur extermination. 18 Élisée dit encore: Prends les flèches. Et il les prit. Élisée dit au roi d’Israël: Frappe contre terre. Et il frappa trois fois, et s’arrêta. 19 L’homme de Dieu s’irrita contre lui, et dit: Il fallait frapper cinq ou six fois; alors tu aurais battu les Syriens jusqu’à leur extermination; maintenant tu les battras trois fois. 20 Élisée mourut, et on l’enterra. L’année suivante, des troupes de Moabites pénétrèrent dans le pays. 21 Et comme on enterrait un homme, voici, on aperçut une de ces troupes, et l’on jeta l’homme dans le sépulcre d’Élisée. L’homme alla toucher les os d’Élisée, et il reprit vie et se leva sur ses pieds. 22 Hazaël, roi de Syrie, avait opprimé Israël pendant toute la vie de Joachaz. 23 Mais l’Éternel leur fit miséricorde et eut compassion d’eux, il tourna sa face vers eux à cause de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, il ne voulut pas les détruire, et jusqu’à présent il ne les a pas rejetés de sa face. 24 Hazaël, roi de Syrie, mourut, et Ben-Hadad, son fils, régna à sa place. 25 Joas, fils de Joachaz, reprit des mains de Ben-Hadad, fils de Hazaël, les villes enlevées par Hazaël à Joachaz, son père, pendant la guerre. Joas le battit trois fois, et il recouvra les villes d’Israël.
