Wives for the Men of Benjamin
1 When the Israelites had met at Mizpah before the war with Benjamin, they had made this sacred promise: “None of us will ever let our daughters marry any man from Benjamin.”
2 After the war with Benjamin, the Israelites went to the place of worship at Bethel and sat there until sunset. They cried loudly and bitterly 3 and prayed, “Our Lord, you are the God of Israel. Why did you let this happen? Now one of our tribes is almost gone.”
4 Early the next morning, the Israelites built an altar and offered sacrifices to please the Lord and to ask his blessing. 5 Then they asked each other, “Did any of the tribes of Israel fail to come to the place of worship? We made a sacred promise that anyone who didn't come to the meeting at Mizpah would be put to death.”
6 The Israelites were sad about what had happened to the Benjamin tribe, and they said, “One of our tribes was almost wiped out. 7 Only a few men of Benjamin weren't killed in the war. We need to get wives for them, so the tribe won't completely disappear. But how can we do that, after promising in the Lord's name that we wouldn't let them marry any of our daughters?”
8-9 Again the Israelites asked, “Did any of the tribes stay away from the meeting at Mizpah?”
After asking around, they discovered that no one had come from Jabesh in Gilead. 10-11 So they sent 12,000 warriors with these orders: “Attack Jabesh in Gilead and kill everyone, except the women who have never been married.”
12 The warriors attacked Jabesh in Gilead, and returned to their camp at Shiloh in Canaan with 400 young women.
13 The Israelites met and sent messengers to the men of Benjamin at Rimmon Rock, telling them that the Israelites were willing to make peace with them. 14 So the men of Benjamin came back from Rimmon Rock, and the Israelites let them marry the young women from Jabesh. But there weren't enough women.
15 The Israelites were very sad, because the Lord had almost wiped out one of their tribes. 16 Then their leaders said:
All the women of the Benjamin tribe were killed. How can we get wives for the men of Benjamin who are left? 17 If they don't have children, one of the Israelite tribes will die out. 18 But we can't let the men of Benjamin marry any of our daughters. We made a sacred promise not to do that, and if we break our promise, we will be under our own curse.
19 Then someone suggested, “What about the Lord's Festival that takes place each year in Shiloh? It's held north of Bethel, south of Lebonah, and just east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem.”
20 The leaders told the men of Benjamin who still did not have wives:
Go to Shiloh and hide in the vineyards near the festival. 21 Wait there for the young women of Shiloh to come out and perform their dances. Then rush out and grab one of the young women, then take her home as your wife. 22 If the fathers or brothers of these women complain about this, we'll say, “Be kind enough to let those men keep your daughter. After all, we couldn't get enough wives for all the men of Benjamin in the battle at Jabesh. And because you didn't give them permission to marry your daughters, you won't be under the curse we earlier agreed on.”
23 The men of Benjamin went to Shiloh and hid in the vineyards. The young women soon started dancing, and each man grabbed one of them and carried her off. Then the men of Benjamin went back to their own land and rebuilt their towns and started living in them again.
24 Afterwards, the rest of the Israelites returned to their homes and families.
Israel Was Not Ruled by a King
25 In those days Israel wasn't ruled by a king, and everyone did what they thought was right.

Ils élevèrent la voix, ils versèrent d’abondantes larmes, 3 et ils dirent: O Éternel, Dieu d’Israël, pourquoi est-il arrivé en Israël qu’il manque aujourd’hui une tribu d’Israël? 4 Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bon matin; ils bâtirent là un autel, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. 5 Les enfants d’Israël dirent: Quel est celui d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël qui n’est pas monté à l’assemblée devant l’Éternel? Car on avait fait un serment solennel contre quiconque ne monterait pas vers l’Éternel à Mitspa, on avait dit: Il sera puni de mort. 6 Les enfants d’Israël éprouvaient du repentir au sujet de Benjamin, leur frère, et ils disaient: Aujourd’hui une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël. 7 Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui ont survécu, puisque nous avons juré par l’Éternel de ne pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes? 8 Ils dirent donc: Y a-t-il quelqu’un d’entre les tribus d’Israël qui ne soit pas monté vers l’Éternel à Mitspa? Et voici, personne de Jabès en Galaad n’était venu au camp, à l’assemblée. 9 On fit le dénombrement du peuple, et il n’y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabès en Galaad. 10 Alors l’assemblée envoya contre eux douze mille soldats, en leur donnant cet ordre: Allez, et frappez du tranchant de l’épée les habitants de Jabès en Galaad, avec les femmes et les enfants. 11 Voici ce que vous ferez: vous dévouerez par interdit tout mâle et toute femme qui a connu la couche d’un homme. 12 Ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabès en Galaad quatre cents jeunes filles vierges qui n’avaient point connu d’homme en couchant avec lui, et ils les amenèrent dans le camp à Silo, qui est au pays de Canaan. 13 Toute l’assemblée envoya des messagers pour parler aux fils de Benjamin qui étaient au rocher de Rimmon, et pour leur annoncer la paix. 14 En ce temps-là, les Benjamites revinrent, et on leur donna les femmes à qui l’on avait laissé la vie parmi les femmes de Jabès en Galaad. Mais il n’y en avait pas assez pour eux. 15 Le peuple éprouvait du repentir au sujet de Benjamin, car l’Éternel avait fait une brèche dans les tribus d’Israël. 16 Les anciens de l’assemblée dirent: Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été détruites? 17 Et ils dirent: Que les réchappés de Benjamin conservent leur héritage, afin qu’une tribu ne soit pas effacée d’Israël. 18 Mais nous ne pouvons pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes, car les enfants d’Israël ont juré, en disant: Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à un Benjamite! 19 Et ils dirent: Voici, il y a chaque année une fête de l’Éternel à Silo, qui est au nord de Béthel, à l’orient de la route qui monte de Béthel, à Sichem, et au midi de Lebona. 20 Puis ils donnèrent cet ordre aux fils de Benjamin: Allez, et placez-vous en embuscade dans les vignes. 21 Vous regarderez, et voici, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser, vous sortirez des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une des filles de Silo pour en faire votre femme, et vous vous en irez dans le pays de Benjamin. 22 Si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre auprès de nous, nous leur dirons: Accordez-les-nous, car nous n’avons pas pris une femme pour chacun dans la guerre. Ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données; en ce cas, vous seriez coupables. 23 Ainsi firent les fils de Benjamin; ils prirent des femmes selon leur nombre parmi les danseuses qu’ils enlevèrent, puis ils partirent et retournèrent dans leur héritage; ils rebâtirent les villes, et y habitèrent. 24 Et dans le même temps les enfants d’Israël s’en allèrent de là chacun dans sa tribu et dans sa famille, ils retournèrent chacun dans son héritage. 25 En ce temps-là, il n’y avait point de roi en Israël. Chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.
