A Widow and a Judge
1 Jesus told his disciples a story about how they should keep on praying and never give up:
2 In a town there was once a judge who didn't fear God or care about people. 3 In that same town there was a widow who kept going to the judge and saying, “Make sure that I get fair treatment in court.”
4 For a while the judge refused to do anything. Finally, he said to himself, “Even though I don't fear God or care about people, 5 I will help this widow because she keeps on bothering me. If I don't help her, she will wear me out.”
6 The Lord said:
Think about what that crooked judge said. 7 Won't God protect his chosen ones who pray to him day and night? Won't he be concerned for them? 8 He will surely hurry and help them. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find on this earth anyone with faith?
A Pharisee and a Tax Collector
9 Jesus told a story to some people who thought they were better than others and who looked down on everyone else:
10 Two men went into the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood over by himself and prayed, “God, I thank you that I am not greedy, dishonest, and unfaithful in marriage like other people. And I am really glad that I am not like that tax collector over there. 12 I go without eating for two days a week, and I give you one tenth of all I earn.”
13 The tax collector stood off at a distance and did not think he was good enough even to look up toward heaven. He was so sorry for what he had done that he pounded his chest and prayed, “God, have pity on me! I am such a sinner.”
14 Then Jesus said, “When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.”
Jesus Blesses Little Children
(Matthew 19.13-15Mark 10.13-16)15 Some people brought their little children for Jesus to bless. But when his disciples saw them doing this, they told the people to stop bothering him. 16 So Jesus called the children over to him and said, “Let the children come to me! Don't try to stop them. People who are like these children belong to God's kingdom. 17 You will never get into God's kingdom unless you enter it like a child!”
A Rich and Important Man
(Matthew 19.16-30Mark 10.17-31)18 An important man asked Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to have eternal life?”
19 Jesus said, “Why do you call me good? Only God is good. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Be faithful in marriage. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not tell lies about others. Respect your father and mother.’ ”
21 He told Jesus, “I have obeyed all these commandments since I was a young man.”
22 When Jesus heard this, he said, “There is one thing you still need to do. Go and sell everything you own! Give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come and be my follower.” 23 When the man heard this, he was sad, because he was very rich.
24 Jesus saw how sad the man was. So he said, “It's terribly hard for rich people to get into God's kingdom! 25 In fact, it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into God's kingdom.”
26 When the crowd heard this, they asked, “How can anyone ever be saved?”
27 Jesus replied, “There are some things that people cannot do, but God can do anything.”
28 Peter said, “Remember, we left everything to be your followers!”
29 Jesus answered, “You can be sure that anyone who gives up home or wife or brothers or family or children because of God's kingdom 30 will be given much more in this life. And in the future world they will have eternal life.”
Jesus Again Tells about His Death
(Matthew 20.17-19Mark 10.32-34)31 Jesus took the twelve apostles aside and said:
We are now on our way to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will happen there. 32 He will be handed over to foreigners, who will make fun of him, mistreat him, and spit on him. 33 They will beat him and kill him, but three days later he will rise to life.
34 The apostles did not understand what Jesus was talking about. They could not understand, because the meaning of what he said was hidden from them.
Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar
(Matthew 20.29-34Mark 10.46-52)35 When Jesus was coming close to Jericho, a blind man sat begging beside the road. 36 The man heard the crowd walking by and asked what was happening. 37 Some people told him that Jesus from Nazareth was passing by. 38 So the blind man shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” 39 The people who were going along with Jesus told the man to be quiet. But he shouted even louder, “Son of David, have pity on me!”
40 Jesus stopped and told some people to bring the blind man over to him. When the blind man was getting near, Jesus asked, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”
“Lord, I want to see!” he answered.
42 Jesus replied, “Look and you will see! Your eyes are healed because of your faith.” 43 At once the man could see, and he went with Jesus and started thanking God. When the crowds saw what happened, they praised God.
Parabole du juge inique
V. 1-8: cf. Lu 11:5-10. Mc 7:24-30. Ge 32:24-29. És 62:6, És 7.1 Jésus leur adressa une parabole, pour montrer qu’il faut toujours prier, et ne point se relâcher. 2 Il dit: Il y avait dans une ville un juge qui ne craignait point Dieu et qui n’avait d’égard pour personne.
3 Il y avait aussi dans cette ville une veuve qui venait lui dire: Fais-moi justice de ma partie adverse. 4 Pendant longtemps il refusa. Mais ensuite il dit en lui-même: Quoique je ne craigne point Dieu et que je n’aie d’égard pour personne, 5 néanmoins, parce que cette veuve m’importune, je lui ferai justice, afin qu’elle ne vienne pas sans cesse me rompre la tête. 6 Le Seigneur ajouta: Entendez ce que dit le juge inique.
7 Et Dieu ne fera-t-il pas justice à ses élus, qui crient à lui jour et nuit, et tardera-t-il à leur égard? 8 Je vous le dis, il leur fera promptement justice. Mais, quand le Fils de l’homme viendra, trouvera-t-il la foi sur la terre?
Parabole du pharisien et du publicain
V. 9-14: cf. Pr 28:9, Pr 13Pr 30:12, Pr 13. Ja 4:6, Ja 9, Ja 10. 1 Pi 5:5, 1 6.9 Il dit encore cette parabole, en vue de certaines personnes se persuadant qu’elles étaient justes, et ne faisant aucun cas des autres:
10 Deux hommes montèrent au temple pour prier; l’un était pharisien, et l’autre publicain. 11 Le pharisien, debout, priait ainsi en lui-même: O Dieu, je te rends grâces de ce que je ne suis pas comme le reste des hommes, qui sont ravisseurs, injustes, adultères, ou même comme ce publicain; 12 je jeûne deux fois la semaine, je donne la dîme de tous mes revenus. 13 Le publicain, se tenant à distance, n’osait même pas lever les yeux au ciel; mais il se frappait la poitrine, en disant: O Dieu, sois apaisé envers moi, qui suis un pécheur. 14 Je vous le dis, celui-ci descendit dans sa maison justifié, plutôt que l’autre. Car quiconque s’élève sera abaissé, et celui qui s’abaisse sera élevé.
Les petits enfants
V. 15-17: cf. (Mt 19:13-15. Mc 10:13-16.) Mt 18:1-4.15 On lui amena aussi les petits enfants, afin qu’il les touchât. Mais les disciples, voyant cela, reprenaient ceux qui les amenaient. 16 Et Jésus les appela, et dit: Laissez venir à moi les petits enfants, et ne les en empêchez pas; car le royaume de Dieu est pour ceux qui leur ressemblent.
17 Je vous le dis en vérité, quiconque ne recevra pas le royaume de Dieu comme un petit enfant n’y entrera point.
L’homme riche. L’héritage de la vie éternelle
V. 18-30: cf. (Mt 19:16-30. Mc 10:17-31.) Mt 5:29, 30.18 Un chef interrogea Jésus, et dit: Bon maître, que dois-je faire pour hériter la vie éternelle? 19 Jésus lui répondit: Pourquoi m’appelles-tu bon? Il n’y a de bon que Dieu seul.
20 Tu connais les commandements: Tu ne commettras point d’adultère; tu ne tueras point; tu ne déroberas point; tu ne diras point de faux témoignage; honore ton père et ta mère. 21 J’ai, dit-il, observé toutes ces choses dès ma jeunesse. 22 Jésus, ayant entendu cela, lui dit: Il te manque encore une chose: vends tout ce que tu as, distribue-le aux pauvres, et tu auras un trésor dans les cieux. Puis, viens, et suis-moi. 23 Lorsqu’il entendit ces paroles, il devint tout triste; car il était très riche. 24 Jésus, voyant qu’il était devenu tout triste, dit: Qu’il est difficile à ceux qui ont des richesses d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu!
25 Car il est plus facile à un chameau de passer par le trou d’une aiguille qu’à un riche d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu. 26 Ceux qui l’écoutaient dirent: Et qui peut être sauvé? 27 Jésus répondit: Ce qui est impossible aux hommes est possible à Dieu. 28 Pierre dit alors: Voici, nous avons tout quitté, et nous t’avons suivi. 29 Et Jésus leur dit: Je vous le dis en vérité, il n’est personne qui, ayant quitté, à cause du royaume de Dieu, sa maison, ou sa femme, ou ses frères, ou ses parents, ou ses enfants,
30 ne reçoive beaucoup plus dans ce siècle-ci, et, dans le siècle à venir, la vie éternelle.
Jésus annonce sa mort et sa résurrection
V. 31-34: cf. (Mt 20:17-19. Mc 10:32-34.) Lu 9:22, 44, 45.31 Jésus prit les douze auprès de lui, et leur dit: Voici, nous montons à Jérusalem, et tout ce qui a été écrit par les prophètes au sujet du Fils de l’homme s’accomplira.
32 Car il sera livré aux païens; on se moquera de lui, on l’outragera, on crachera sur lui, 33 et, après l’avoir battu de verges, on le fera mourir; et le troisième jour il ressuscitera. 34 Mais ils ne comprirent rien à cela; c’était pour eux un langage caché, des paroles dont ils ne saisissaient pas le sens.
Guérison d’un aveugle à Jéricho
V. 35-43: cf. (Mt 20:29-34. Mc 10:46-53.)35 Comme Jésus approchait de Jéricho, un aveugle était assis au bord du chemin, et mendiait. 36 Entendant la foule passer, il demanda ce que c’était. 37 On lui dit: C’est Jésus de Nazareth qui passe. 38 Et il cria: Jésus, Fils de David, aie pitié de moi! 39 Ceux qui marchaient devant le reprenaient, pour le faire taire; mais il criait beaucoup plus fort: Fils de David, aie pitié de moi! 40 Jésus, s’étant arrêté, ordonna qu’on le lui amène; et, quand il se fut approché, 41 il lui demanda: Que veux-tu que je te fasse? Il répondit: Seigneur, que je recouvre la vue. 42 Et Jésus lui dit: Recouvre la vue; ta foi t’a sauvé. 43 A l’instant il recouvra la vue, et suivit Jésus, en glorifiant Dieu. Tout le peuple, voyant cela, loua Dieu.
